2016 September 11: Dry goods markets

11 September 2016

It has been 15 years since the horrible bombing of the World trade center in New York City.  I will always remember being in Romania on this day in 2001 and how I felt to be away from home, how helpless I felt, and at the same time, how much the Romanians reached out to all of us there and did whatever they could to make us feel at home.  I think of our time here in China and I wonder in 15 years, what has changed in the world?   Is it a safer place?  For what values do we stand?  What will the world be like in another 15 years?  What will our grand daughter have to face?  I pray for the USA and for our family.   I pray our leaders can learn from the past so that we don't have to repeat our history.   For today, I am happy we are in China, enjoying the Expat life here and seeing and able to share our little corner of the world with you.

This is the 3rd of the "normal life" in Shenyang series.

Dry good markets

One of our normal life markets is shopping for dry goods...dried foods, fabrics, clothing, chinese herbs, spices, eye glasses, fingernails polished, etc (lots of other things falls into etc (such as tatoo applications, which I don't use!)
The markets we go to for these types of things is not far from our apartment (like most of the markets we go to) so some times we walk there, other times we take the car. In all cases, the worst part of going to this market is crossing the street to get in the building where the market is. It is an eternal traffic jam and we have to cross the jam zig zagging between cars and busses...it makes me take a deep breath just to think about it! And as I write this, it's even worse because of the moon cake sales all over the place!  The first place is called Wen Zhou Cheng.
Taken from the backseat of the car...I could almost reach out and touch the police car!

Once parked (along the side of the road, now, Rod will take me arm and arm and navigate to cross the street...our target is the big orange building

moon cakes getting unboxed, ready for sidewalk sales

The sea of motor scooters..some are delivery mobiles, some are private taxis, some are personal transportation..most all are electric...which is good for pollution, but since they are very quiet, it's hard to hear them coming and most of them ride on the sidewalks.

Chinese aphrodisiacs and tea additives

Once we get inside the market we see the chinese herbs and teas, dried sea cucumbers, and other dried things that are used for various reasons (it seems most aphrodisiac uses (dried deer antlers, dried deer penises, other various dried body parts from various animals to help spin up sex appeal!) Rod says it must be the reason for needing the "one child policy"...not sure about that!  We typically don't buy a lot in this area, but always interesting to see what is here!  The main floor for this is on the top floor of this same building. I'm guessing wholesale is upstairs and retail is downstairs.
More dried stuff for teas.  They recommended the red seeds to help sleep (which I need from time to time).  I call it "red ball jet" tea.  Not my favorite taste, but does seem to work!

Dried rose buds to put in tea!  Actually tastes and smells good!

Dried flowers for more tea additives

Not sure what all this stuff is, but If you can dry it, they will put in in tea and drink it!

Rows and rows of dried sea cucumbers. I have eaten them before and they are quite expensive when you buy them at a restaurant...not my favorite!

Dried frogs, dear antlers, penises, snakes  I'm guessing good for all that ales you!

Rod having fun with a bag of deer penises!  I think it's a man thing!

Spices and dried fish and sea plants

We go down stairs of this  building and find the spices and dried fish.   It is hard to describe this area without the smell.  Imagine opening all of the spices in the supermarket or your home spice cabinet and multiplying this by 100 times.  Overload of the senses!  Smells, Sounds, Sights Samples for tastes, you name it, you can experience it in this market!
Peppers and spices in bulk

Everyone can buy and sell at the market

dried mushrooms on strings

Not sure all what all of the spices are...lots of them!

dried noodles in bundles

dried fish and lots of them!

Dried seaweeds and other sea plants

More dried sea foods

Fruits, nuts and other stuff

After coming up stairs, we come in to the dried fruits, nuts and more meats etc.  Here we get bulk nuts (almonds, walnuts, apricot Kernals, occasionally peanuts, dried purple or yellow sweet potatoes slices (they are too good...it requires me to self ration!)  There are some things about China that I will not miss when we eventually leave here, but this market and being able to buy all of these foods in bulk will be one of the experiences we really will miss. Rod has developed such a good relationship with some of our favorite vendors here and they all take care of him to give him the best quality foods and don't cheat him.  This floor of the market is always busy and Rod shops here frequently.  Below is a short video of activity on the fruits and nuts section..always something happening!

Dried meats that are actually coated with a sugar sauce..We don't eat this any more, but when we did, it tasted surprisingly good!

Rod's favorite dried fruit lady...this stuff is too good too!

Rod and Sarah with one of the ladies we buy nuts from

Dried fruits my weekness...dried sweet potatoes...too good!

Fresh walnuts...I'm addicted!  This is Rod's preferred Walnut vendor!

Many varieties of walnuts ..and it may cost a little more, but I prefer mine pre-shelled!

Lots of Goji berries (sometimes called Wolf berries in the US).  Very expensive in the US!  They are very high in anti-oxidants (much higher than blueberris).  I eat them like a raisin in a nut mix. Sometimes, I put them in my tea. (very common here in China).

A section for all your wedding candy needs!  We don't shop here, but it's always a riot of colors!

Candies of all colors!

Fabrics and furs and ready made clothes

Continuing on in this same building, we end up in the fabric market where we find fabrics and furs. Yes, furs pelts and small fur products. Before I lost weight, I bought a lot of fabric here to get Tailor- made clothes (the Tailors are up on the next floor up!). Now Since my weight is stable, I buy clothes at Uniqlo and wear them for several seasons. It was a big benchmark for me to be able to buy "off the shelf" clothes here in China so I don't go to this section of the market much any more. I do go to the furs section to get some small gloves, scarves etc for the winter, but that is not out yet as I went on a stroll to take pictures here!
I always see these manikins as we go up the escalator and always remark how ugly the dresses are...so I had to get my picture taken with them!  As I stood there, a Chinese couple also took my picture!

A few of the furs at our little fur store...these are the all season fur collars.  Later this year, this little shop will be converted to have all kinds of gloves, hats, stoles in various types of furs such as mink, and fox.  It's one of my favorite parts about living in Shenyang..a good excuse to get some fur items...so I really like this little store!  Even after 6+ years, we still havn't gotten into the bright colored furs though!

The silks here are so beautiful!

Silk for some traditional chinese dresses and jackets...maybe next time!

A little slow at the silk stall today!
Another of my favorite shops...always interesting selections and nice ladies!

One of my favorite little shops...nice lady, good prices and a selection that is forever changing!

Just your typical aisle at the clothing section of this market

Eyeglasses

Within easy walking distance of the nuts market, we have a multi-story of eye glasses market. Nothing but eye glasses ! Copies of designer frames, local brand of frames, etc. We have bought several pairs of glasses here...the prices are good, but sometimes, I have had trouble getting the glasses adapted to my eyes...and not being able to communicate effectively is a frustrater! They are very nice and will redo it as many times as necessary, but it's not my favorite place to go!

We thought that any eye glass place with a brand of "Helen Keller" glasses was just amazing..had to get a picture of that!

You want glasses, have we got a style for you!

Nothing but eye glasses...for as far as you can see!

Chinese eye chart (no kidding!)

Our eye glass guy grinding our a chip in my glasses...while you wait!

Fingernails at the underground

Just outside the eye glasses building is an entrance to the underground market. This market is 100% underground. It's like a mini mall..not mini in terms of space, but mini in terms of stalls for the venders. Each ship is about the size of a flea market stall. At the extreme end of this market is an area that had nothing but makeup shops, manicure/pedicures stalls, tatoo shops, and a food court area...3 floors of all the above! I go here to get my manicures. I didn't trust this until about a year ago..it's not nearly as hygienic as the shops in the US and the polish is different (it dries when exposed to UV light and it stays on perfectly for 3 weeks! It has to be soaked off with acetone. The lady who does my nails does not speak English and in fact she helps me learn more and more Chinese. I have evolved from avoiding this to really liking going to do this on the weekends. Don't ask me why or how I changed ..it just happened!

Going down to the underground of Shenyang
Shoes to the left of me ,shoes to the right, here I am, stuck in the middle with you!

Small leather purses with whimiscal themes are always fun!

Pick your fingernail polish anyone?  What color is your fancy?

Underground Shneyang Clothing section stores..small and stuffed!

A pet shop in the underground..fish, hampsters, puppies and kittens...check!

One small sample of the Food court in the underground

Seat covers

There are actually several places in the city where you can buy seat covers for your car or any other seat I'm sure...any color, any fabric!  We settled on some sheep skin seat covers..plain off white...not the hot pink or electric blue ones..warm in winter, cool in summer.
A pic from our seat-cover shopping trip in the winter!

So that about does it for this entry describing "normal life" in Shenyang! More to come!

2016 September, Post 2: "Normal life" in Shenyang China (fresh markets)

3 September 2016

This is the 2nd of xx posts for "normal Life" in Shenyang, China.

Fresh Markets

One of my favorite "normal" life activities is going to the markets. Rod does most of the shopping so these trips are really necessary and normal for our life here. At first they were intimidating and and uneasy sure we could eat xx, trust xxx, communicate xxx...you fill in the blanks! Now, I can honestly say, we have acclimated, our guts have the right flora to handle the different things here (I think and hope that is true!) and now, things that used to surprise us are now just "normal". All of our shopping experiences are always a feast for all of the senses....sometimes an irritating or smelly feast, but always a feast!
If you know where to look you can find anything here in a market!

Fruits/ vegetables/fresh eggs/ fresh cut meat/ pre-made salads/ fresh bread...all in one "hole in the wall" or street vendor market or others that are specialized in vegetables, fresh made tofu for restaurants. These places are all over the city, fresh every day. It's a logistics wonder of the world!
Fresh Strawberries in the Spring from Dandong, so sweet, so big!

Silk Worm larvae...the cook these and eat them..I'm not that far along yet in my Chinese culture!

One of Rod's favorite "hole in the wall" markets, fresh eggs, fresh fruits and a nice little lady who treats him like a king!

Fresh tofu made to order...fresh or smoked.  Doesn't last very long, so it must be eaten quickly!

Rod and one of his vegetable ladies

Vegetables can be bought many many different places..always seems to be fresh!

More fresh fruits

One of our favorite larger fruit/vegetable/meat markets

The best citrus fruits are in December - Feb...fresh from the south of China..real fresh, "mandarin" oranges

Really fresh meat...not going to be a good day for the goat

Fresh vegetables

Fresh made salads ready to buy

Get your own fresh Buddah gord!
Plants/ fresh cut flowers/ fish
This is one of my favorite markets...1st floor is has 2 things: fresh cut flowers and live fish. There are scores of florists making up bouquets for weddings and other special occasions. It smells and looks wonderful (don't look on the floor...just look straight ahead!). It is a bright spot especially in winter when it is bleak and dreary and cold outside!
Fresh flowers are always great to see in Winter! This is the lady Rod goes to to buy flowers...I don't really know her but, I like her already!!

Fresh flowers...a feast for the eyes!
Gong to be a big wedding!

Getting the Rolls Royce all dolled up for the wedding..parked right outside the flower market!  Probably the closest I 'll ever get to a Rolls Royce!

The other thing on the first floor is the fish. Every type of fresh water (and salt water) fish you can imagine. We got an aquarium in our apartment about 4 years ago..it is very relaxing for me to watch the fish just gracefully swim around. It also serves as a great humidifier for our apartment! We have seen fish come and go and we have tried many different species to see which ones do well and which ones don't. I'm still not sure we know...but it's so easy and cheap to buy new ones that it really doesn't matter! Of course, like all markets, Rod has made friends at certain venders and they always give him a good deal (or at least that is our impression!). There are fish and of course all of the accessories for fish, fish tanks, decorations, filters, food, plants etc...all your fishing needs!

Fishes and plants in our apartment in Shenyang

Fish in our home aquarium...Rod is a great fish care-taker!

Fishing in Shenyang

On the 2nd floor of this market is potted plants. There is everything from tiny succulents to huge potted trees and everything in between! There are several orchid dealers and even though I really enjoy working with plants inside and outside (when I had a yard at home I the US), I never had good luck with Orchids..but, I really enjoy looking at them! So, again, it is relatively cheap to go get a "new one" and give the old one (no longer blooming) to the cleaning lady! It seems there is an endless supply of them at the market with different colors and for 30 RMB (4.50 USD) I can get a new one that is just getting ready to bloom and it will give me blooms for 3 months! No brainier for me!

If one orchid is good, a few hundred is even better!

Fur coats and Orchids...something strange about that!  Must be Shenyang!

Azaleas are native to the south of China..love them blooming in the winter inside the market!

There is also a young lady who sells succulents in her little glass terrariums..they are exquisite and I have bought several from her, and made several myself. I was never a big succulent fan before, but living in an apartment with dry heat/low humidity, I found it was one of the few types of plants that does well here. I started taking snips off of the mature plants and starting new ones in a starter pot and soon I had many new ones..so I started buying small pots for new new plants and taking them to work to put in my window there. Occasionally, I give someone a plant and make them an "honorary plant manager" of their plant from my special little snip garden. It seems to be well received.
One of my favorite succulent market places in Shenyang
One of my succulent purchases...they do seem to like the sunlight on the windowsill!

My window sill at work, the small ones are from my "snip" garden and become gifts to my staff to become "honory plant managers"

In addition to these markets, there are other markets for fabric, tailored clothing, spices, chinese medicine herbs, etc...that will be another entry! In addition to the markets, there are many sections of the city that have big shopping areas...electronics street, kitchen street, baking street, eye glass city, etc...another entry for that one too!

So that is about it for entry 2 for "normal life"in Shenyang, China!

2016 September 1: "Normal life" in Shenyang China

28 August 2016

This is the 1st of several (not sure how many) posts in normal life in Shenyang, China covering various topics as I get inspired to write about them.

As usual it has been longer than I would like for a blog post update. I guess it's my "new normal". When I look back on my previous blog posts, I'm sure that many of you have the impression that all we do is travel around Asia on vacation! Well, I can tell you it's not quite like that! Yes, we have been able to travel and see many new/strange/exciting/boring/disgusting (you fill in your adjective of choice) sights and sounds and experiences. Those experiences however special are not our Normal life! Like you all, we work for a living and like you, we don't take pictures of everything in our "normal life" and post them for all to see! I have to admit with cameras on or cellphones, I do take many more pictures now than ever before and I do post some "normal life" experiences on Facebook.

This blog post is the first of what I will call "normal life" here in Shenyang (if I dare to say any part of life is normal, no matter where we live!)
I'm not really sure how to start, and I'm not sure there will be a rhyme or reason...so with that said, here goes!

Traffic in Shenyang

It seems here, I spend a lot of time in the car traveling back and forth to work. We live right down town Shenyang, and the factory is in a industrial park in out outside edge of Shenyang. Depending on the time of day I start the journey, it can take anywhere from 35 minutes to 1h30m to get to and from. Traffic can be horrendous. The discipline of following stop signs and stop lights has improved over the past 6 years we've lived here, but still very "go with the flow" oriented and not so much "follow the rules". There is a reason we have professional drivers here for 2 main reasons the way I figure : 1) If/when there is an accident, it will always be the westerner's fault..no matter what, and westerner will have to pay. We don't know all the rules, we won't be able to follow the logic, and therefore plead a case, and we have no connections to make the equivalent of a "plea bargain" outside or inside the court. 2) As a western driver, our brain uses the rules we were taught, especially to look before entering the main road and to yield etc. These rules do not work here..if we were driving, I would never get anywhere...I would be waiting until I had sufficient space to merge...and here someone else would see their space to merge is much less than mine...and I would be stuck! Better to sit in the back seat, look at something, but certainly not the distance between my window and the bus right beside me I could touch easily with my hand just slightly extended, or the person on the bicycle that just pulls out into the main road without looking and expects everyone else to squeeze around them without hitting them! Whew..makes me take a deep breath just writing about it!  There are no good photos to describe traffic or photos...everything just looks like stopped cars...so you can imagine for yourself!  The good news is that all cars have tires...and when they have to replace them, I hope it's with Michelin tires made in China, made for China!

Company dinners/going away parties

As we have been here in Shenyang for over 6 years, as I've lead a project to built and plant with the help of several expats like myself, we have seen our share of people coming to and going from Shenyang. In addition the local staff have been in their positions for several years and they are now starting to change positions. Lately, I've been to more and more "going away" parties. We started the tradition to honor the service and contributions that people have had in their positions by hosting a going away dinner. We have many toasts in their honor and also find some small gifts for them to take to their next position in the company as a momento of their time with their current team. We also honor the new person arriving to the team so that they can start to understand the culture working with their new teammates. Of course, it's not only the comings and goings..we also do team building events...but that is another entry! Some are funny, some are sentimental and I believe all are appreciated. As the plant manager, I go to many of these types of meals/ parties. I usually give the opening and closing toasts and a small speech in the middle which highlights the persons company history and some stories about my personal connection to the honoree, then we open it up to others to share their funny or appreciation story about the honoree. And of course the honoree is expected to give a small speech. If they are leaving the site we give them a photo of the plant with people's notes of well wishes written in the matting, and usually a simple scrap book of photos collected during their work and sometimes a small gift. These are a very special event for the person team, so it takes some preparation. Every time I do one of these, I get all of the emotions about my own departure some day...honestly I do not look forward to it..it will be a very emotional day/week/month for us. So that's not today..that's in the future!
There are too many, so there's no I way, I will capture all of my friends parties I have attended/presided over, so I just show a few or my recent ones here.

The teachers of the French School just before it closed

Francois Esnault departure, going to France

Hao Weiguo leaving Shenyang and going to Shanghai

Wang Xingwei retirement
Zhang Wei retirement party

A three way going away party for Antoine going back to France, Hao Yixing, going to Shanghai and Stefan going to Japan...Michelin is truly a multi-national company!,

Guido going back to Germany

So that is enough for post 1 of "normal life" Shenyang part 1!  To be continued as we trudge our path to happy destiny here in Shenyang!
